The Ja&#7749gn&#257m&#257 is an account in verse of a battle on the banks of the River Sutlej in which an attack from the imperial troops was countered and repulsed by Sikhs under the personal command of Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh. No date is given of the event, but a reference in the text to "Kh&#257ls&#257, " inaugurated in 1699, and other details indicate that it was one of the last battles of Anandpur. A manuscript of the work is preserved in the private collection of the Mah&#257r&#257j&#257 of Pa&#7789i&#257l&#257. The poem has been included by the Shiroma&#7751&#299 Gurdw&#257r&#257 Parbandhak Committee in the collection Pr&#257ch&#299n V&#257r&#257&#7749 te Ja&#7749gn&#257me, and by Bh&#257sh&#257 Vibh&#257g, Punjab, in Pañch Nad. The poet has tried several prosodic measures in the 70-stanza poem. The language used is bh&#257kh&#257, or contemporary Hindi, except in the pau&#7771&#299s which are in chaste Punjabi.

BIBLIOGRAPHY

Padam, Pi&#257r&#257 Si&#7749gh, Gur&#363 Gobind Si&#7749gh J&#299 de Darb&#257r&#299 Ratan. Patiala, 1976

Kuir Si&#7749gh, Gurbil&#257s P&#257tsh&#257h&#299 10. Patiala, 1968

Pi&#257r&#257 Si&#7749gh Padam
